This week’s Fiesta de Azucar quilt block is a little unusual, in that designer Kate Colleran has decided to go green!
Kate Colleran is the owner of Seams Like a Dream. She is a retired registered nurse, who has made a second career out of designing quilts. Things have been on a roll for Kate since she put away her stethoscope in 2012, with lots of new patterns, quilts in magazines, a Craftsy class, and her newest book, “Smash Your Precut Stash” from C&T Publishing.
Kate created her block, “Merry Mary” in memory of her mother, who was born in May. Everything about her joyful skull speaks to the idea of spring–the lush grassy green background, bluebirds, and flowers. One of the blooms she included is Lily of the Valley, the May birth month flower. Did you notice how the crinkly smiling eyes are fashioned out of M’s for “May”, and the nose from a heart?
Click on “Fiesta de Azucar” on the menu at the top of this page to discover other blocks in this series. Nine talented artists, nine blocks, two border options. $3 each. (Next week, August 19, is a block that involves a rotary cutter). Also, check out our Facebook page, Fiesta de Azucar 2017. Stitch up one of our blocks and post it on our FB page. On October 30, there will be prizes!
